Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

Godzilla x Kong Poster

⭐⭐

Fans of the Iconic titans Godzilla & Kong will get exactly what they came for—big monsters fighting bigger monsters. However, the film has little else to offer with the plot essentially boiling down to Kong finding an evil version of himself and teaming up with Godzilla to take it down. The kind of story a primary school child could make up.

For me, the most exciting part of a monster movie is the build-up before the payoff. It's the element of mystery reminiscent of legends like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot. The idea of coming face to face with an unknown terror, that's what makes these films exciting. It all feels a little redundant without it.

The Human storyline feels like a big waste of time which is a shame seeing as it takes up half the runtime. The Hollow Earth was a cool idea, a secret land inhabited by titans attempts to bring back that feeling of exploring the unknown but the revelation of yet another secret land hidden within the Hollow Earth feels ridiculous and a little lazy to me. The world's big enough, no need to make up these make-believe worlds inside it.

I did still for the most part enjoy my time with this. The special effects were impressive and it's always great seeing Godzilla on the big screen. But this film entirely misses the point of a monster movie. Sometimes the less we know the better. Who would've thought living in a world of monsters would be so dull?
