Can a musical hater enjoy Wicked?

⭐⭐⭐

I've never been a musical fan. Yet despite my scepticism, Wicked won me over. Delivering a charming story, with spectacular visuals that stay true to the classic 1939 film, expanding Oz to the scale of a modern Blockbuster. But make no mistake, it's a musical through and through.

Adapted from the stage, songs are as frequent as they are long. Characters will often be conversing normally before bursting randomly into song without warning. I'd be lying if I said I didn't roll my eyes a couple of times upon realising another one was about to begin. To be fair to Wicked the soundtrack is impressive, with plenty of memorable catchy songs made even better by Cynthia Erivo's and Ariana Grande's unforgettable performances. They are both brilliant, I enjoyed watching them evolve from rivals to friends throughout.

Unfortunately, this did drag a little longer than I would've liked. A few songs overstayed their welcome, it did however end on a high note. (Literally). Part 2 is scheduled to be released sometime in 2025. Let's hope this too can stick the landing.
