Adolescence

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

An impeccable crime drama and unnervingly relevant to British culture. After the murder of a school girl, the 4 part mini-series created by Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne details the fallout of the crime.

Each episode is filmed in one shot. A feat that sounds almost impossible yet looks effortless on screen. From police raiding a house in episode 1 to traversing through the labyrinthian-style layout of a typical secondary school in episode 2, the effect immerses you into the non-stop action that adds to the stress of the whole ordeal. Fiction though it may be it's grounded in reality. There's no over-the-top dramatisation to be found.

What's disturbing is the show's familiarity with real-world crimes that have become increasingly common in recent years. In a statement on the Southport attack Prime Minister Kier Starmer declared "Britain now faces a new threat" from "loners, misfits, young men in their bedroom, accessing all manner of material online". Children across the UK are finding role models in the worst places online. Convinced that the world is set up against them. Young minds are all too easily influenced by people corrupting, and attacking their self-worth.

Although Creator Jack Thorne admits Adolescence doesn't give any answers he goes on to say "It's a really complicated time but we need to be talking about these things." Hopefully, this is the start of a conversation long overdue.
